Chapter 4

Starlight… Star Bright… Star Fight…

Meet The Starry Eyed Akimichi’s

The Akimichi’s filter into the living room behind Hinata and young Himawari, with Himawari still tethered to mommy. Hinata and Himawari retake their seats on their cushions as before, while Shikamaru, Choji, and Choza, enter in behind them already embroiled in a bit of a private argument.

Shikamaru:

I know… I know… I understand… But that doesn’t make it any easier for me to deal with…

Choji:

Ohhh… Shikamaru…

Shikamaru:

Save it… Don’t even bother… I don’t even want to hear it just yet… not until this is over… And then were going have a long talk about this… just the two of us… Mendocuse!… I was your best man!… And you were mine!… Until I say otherwise… you’re going to be my extra special adviser… and my personal assistant… Where I go… you go… Where I stay… you stay… Wakarimasuka?…

Choji:

Hai!… Shikamaru taisho!… Wakata!…

Choza:

Please Shikamarusama… Don’t be too harsh on my son… It was I who vouched for Shintaro… and by extension his daughter… back when they first got engaged… It was I who advised my son to keep Shintaro’s family secrets… as if they were the Akimichi’s… And after the marriage… they effectively were…

As the three shinobi continue their private discussion, Shikamaru retakes his stool at the breakfast bar, joined on adjacent stools by Choji and Choza. Karui, Chocho, and Yukai follow in behind the others.

Yukai:

Come on big sis… your being unreasonable…

Karui:

And your far too loyal and trusting with that crazy old man!… Oi!… Baca Sennin!… I don’t know what kind of crazy you bring with you this time… But I’m not letting you drag my family into your insanity anymore!… I’m done listening to all of your crazy stories and lame excuses… And I won’t have you filling Chocho’s head with any more of that garbage either…

Shintaro:

Karui!… You know better than that… You know… that I am as sane as sane gets… But I completely deserve your distrust… and more than that… daughter… But for reasons beyond our control… I cannot allow this sort of self indulgent denial!… not at a time like this!… I know that I forced upon you a great burden of secrecy… But the time for keeping such secrets… is over!… over for the secrets… that I made you keep for me… and over for the secrets… that I’ve kept from you… Especially for you… Karui…

Karui:

Do the rest of us get any say… as to whether or not you keep our secrets?…

Shintaro:

I’m afraid not… daughter… Our secrets… are no longer our own… Our fates… were never really our own to begin with…

Karui:

I was afraid… you would say that…

Karui slightly dislodges her sword with her left hand, and takes a firm grip of her katana’s handle with her right. Suddenly, Karui rapidly withdraws her sword, already charged with her electric purple aura of chakra, and with a single motion her sword’s tip is brought to point in Shintaro’s direction, then suddenly discharging it’s purple lightening, all directly at Shintaro’s heart. As the discharge begins, he raises his arms to cross them in front of him, like some sort of block, then just stands there and takes the full hit of Karui’s attack without flinching. In sage mode Shintaro’s body rapidly heals all the electrical burn damage from Karui’s attack, as he lowers his arms back down again.

Shintaro:

Behave yourself!… If you wish… when all of this is all over and done with… and you would still like to try and kill me… consider yourself to have an open invitation… for afterwards… for after I’ve had my say… So that you may at least know why you should… if at all… and then decide for yourself!…

Karui:

No!… I’m not sitting through any more of your craziness!… Not anymore!… I should never have let Yukai talk me into coming here!… Choji!… Chocho!… Stay if you like… But I just can’t take it anymore!… I’m going home now!… And I’m never listening to you… ever again!…

Shintaro:

No!!!…

Shintaro’s word ‘No’ rattles the beams of Naruto’s home In a booming voice that stops his daughter Karui in her tracks, as she had turned to walk out.

Shintaro:

Even if you leave now… never to speak to me again… there is one thing that must be done… before you may leave…

Karui:

Oh?… What’s that?… You crazy old baca sennin…

Shintaro walks over to his daughter Karui, and turns her around to face him. Shintaro performs a quick sequence of hand seals, before bringing both hands together when they begin to glow. Then Shintaro places both his hands on Karui’s eyes for a moment, before pulling them away to reveal a pair a yellow Rinnegan, a solid yellow eye with only black concentric circles, similar to the purple one known to have been possessed by the Sage of Six Paths, where Karui’s normal yellow eyes used to be, leaving the assembled friends and family quite shocked at the revelation.

Yukai:

Finally!… Now I don’t have to wear these stupid shades all the time…

Yukai takes off his sunglasses, and reveals his own pair of yellow Rinnegan.

Shintaro:

Chocho… Come here…

Chocho:

Me?!?…

Shintaro:

Yes!… You!…

Shintaro motions for his granddaughter to come over before him, and then performs the same sequence of hand seals as before with Karui. As he removes his glowing hands from Chocho’s eyes, he reveals a similar pair of yellow Rinnegan.

Shintaro:

If you still feel the need to leave… and never hear from me again… I will understand… I deserve nothing less… But this is about more than you and I… and our issues!… I do not deserve your trust Karui… But you owe it to yourself… and to your family… most especially your daughter… to at least listen to what I have to say… There is still a lot that you don’t yet know…

Karui:

When?… When did you seal… Chocho’s eyes?!?… When did Chocho… even get those eyes in the first place?!?…

Shintaro:

Chocho was born with them… just as you and Yukai were… But I had to seal them away shortly after she was born… and used genjutsu to seal the memories of anyone who had seen her with them… for the same reasons that I had to seal away yours and your brothers… when we came to Kumo long ago… for the chance at a semi-normal life… and to hide from the Otsutsuki Empire…

Chocho:

Granpa?…

Shintaro:

Yes Chocho?…

Chocho:

Are we gonna have to… leave Konaha?… Because of the empire?… Because of… my eyes?!?…

Shintaro:

I hope not Chocho… but this is not about eyes… This is about what they signify… as a telltale sign… of imperial royalty… and the poison of politics that inevitably follows… None of which is any of your fault I assure you… If nothing else… you can always just blame me… That’s what your mother does…

Chocho:

Imperial royalty?…

Shintaro:

Why yes!… Indeed!… And quite imperious!… Although… not by any choice of you or your mother’s… But the emperor cares nothing for any of that…

Chocho:

Mama!… You lied to me mama!… You said not to listen!… You said granpa was crazy!…

Karui:

Keep listening long enough Chocho… and eventually… you’ll agree with your mother…

Chocho:

How?… Why?… Are we aliens?!?…

Shintaro:

My son and daughters… including your mother… are the grandchildren of the Otsutsuki Emperor… which makes you his great granddaughter…

Karui:

Daughters?!?… What do you mean daughters?… You can’t possibly mean…

Yukai:

Yeah big sis!… We found her!… She’s fine!… Or as fine as someone can be… having been raised by our imperial granpa for a number of years…

Shintaro:

I wanted to introduce her to you… But that is a bit of a difficult matter to arrange…. You see… Your sister is… a bit delicate… Your sister’s ordeal… at the hands of the emperor… from birth… has rendered her… psychically damaged and delicate… but extremely powerful… and prone to… difficult episodes…

Karui:

Where is she?!?… Where are you keeping her?!?… What have you done with her?!?…

Shintaro:

Take it easy Karui… I will bring her here shortly… But there are things you must understand first…

Karui:

I demand to see my sister now!!!…

Shintaro:

Very well then!… So be it!… Clear a space!…

Hinata and Himawari jump up off their cushions and remove them in order to clear that space for Shintaro. Then Shintaro pulls out a small scroll again from his messenger bag, opens it up in the clearing on floor, and runs his index finger along one of it’s entries, infusing chakra into it as he does. A dark and opaque wind swirls about in the clearing on the floor, clearing away itself to reveal a beautiful young maiden and her koto, with a small side table revealed right next to them. The young maiden wore formal kimono attire befitting a princess on her wedding day, with eyes that glow the pale yellow glow of a pair of yellow Rinnegan. Her head was covered with a formal headdress, worn low enough to conceal her entire forehead. The young maiden strokes the strings of her koto, and a series of rainbow sparkles of light populate and dance about in the air, for a few brief moments before dissipating, as if to just say ‘hi.’

Shintaro:

I’m afraid that my youngest daughter cannot speak due to a childhood trauma… Her koto is one of her only means of communication… Her name is… Ishitara… Not because I chose it… But because the emperor did… And it’s what she’s used to… Anything else… would be an unnecessary complication for her…

Karui:

What happened to her?…

Shintaro:

The same thing that happened with your grandmother and your mother… Something I’ve never told you about… Your mother never wanted to discuss it… So we let it lie…

Karui:

Funny choice of words… for a liar!…

Shintaro:

I’ve never lied to you Karui!… I just haven’t told you everything!… I couldn’t tell you everything!… Until now… for your sake… and for the sake of your new family… for a chance at a semi-normal life… the same semi-normal life that you so desperately cling to now… I’m afraid… I must also apologize… to my son-in-law… Choji… I revealed a great deal to you… many years ago… before you were married… to be fair… if anything be fair… and then demanded that you keep the family secrets… without even knowing the full story… But some things simply could not be revealed… until now… And now the truth… no longer belongs to us alone…

Karui:

Ishitara?… My name is Karui… I’m your older sister… Did our father and Yukai tell you about me?…

Yukai:

She doesn’t talk big sis… I don’t understand exactly how it works… But… Something is just… broken… However it may heal… she’s never really going to be exactly… normal…

Karui:

But she still understands me right?… If she wants to …. she can still nod her head… to say yes right?… Ishitara?…

Ishitara nods her head up and down, to say yes.

Shintaro:

She can do well more than that… Yukai?… Can you get her her scroll?…

Yukai:

Sure thing!…

Yukai walks over to Ishitara, reaches back into his fanny pack and pulls out a small scroll, then unfolds the blank scroll onto the small table. Then he reaches back again, and pulls out a small black clay ink well jar with a cork stopper on top, and sets it next to her scroll. With quick fluid movement of the hands and fingers, Ishitara weaves a number of hand seals before waving her hand over the ink well jar. As she waves her hand over, the cork stopper top of the clay ink well, the jar’s lid pops off under the pressure of the black ink shooting upward and then down onto the paper, animated and controlled by Ishitara’s chakra, the ink spreads itself over the scroll, morphing and shaping itself to form patterns on the page, forming readable symbols and characters. Karui walks over to her and leans over to look at her handiwork, as she reads.

Karui:

‘Hello… big sister… Nice… to meet you’… That’s kind of like the Super Beast Scroll jutsu… isn’t it?…

Ishitara waves her hand again, as Chocho comes over and joins her mother with a hug as Karui reads.

Karui:

‘I can… do that… too’… Wow!… But does she really understand?… And what’s with the hat?… Can’t she take that hat off?… Does she understand me?…

Yukai:

She has her reasons… for the hat… She’s kinda sensitive about it…

Ishitara strums the strings of her koto once and the light in the air above her koto begins to shimmer, with colors morphing and twisting shape, until they take the form of an image in the air of Karui hugging Chocho, depicted as they stand before Ishitara now, but with a pink heart outline drawn around them in the air.

Karui:

Wow!… That’s incredible!…

Then Karui looks down at Ishitara’s scroll again as she waves her hand over it.

Karui:

‘Never mind… the hat’…

Yukai:

Told you!… She’s sensitive!…

Shintaro gets up and walks over to his youngest daughter, sitting on the floor with her koto, and kneels down to meet her at eye level.

Shintaro:

I know your sensitive about it… But… We are among family and friends here… You are safe here… among friends… Even if they may be shocked… they are still friends… You have nothing to fear here… Please Ishitara… Take off the hat…

As a result of Shintaro’s gentle pleading, Ishitara begins to raise her hands to her hat, then hesitates before removing her hat, to reveal a head of long vivid red hair that drops down behind her back without the hat on, bordered at the hairline at the top of her forehead by two small horns, which protrude straight out from her forehead, before curving back and up slightly before the tip. In the center of her forehead is a single closed slit for a third eye, which suddenly opens, revealing a single glowing pale blue Tenseigan, a higher form of the Byakugan. Karui reacts with genuine shock, at her baby sisters appearance, raising her hand to her mouth, trying to suppress her own reaction, as she hugs Chocho tighter.

Kakashi:

What kind of eye is that?… that you all seem to have?… Is that a Rinnegan?…

Shintaro:

It is a rare variant form… of the Rinnegan… It is known as… the Starlight Rinnegan…

Kakashi:

The Starlight Rinnegan?…

Shintaro:

Yes… It rarely appears… But… when it does… it usually only appears when… in an Ostutsuki… it happens as a response to a rapid influx of chakra… all at once… as a kind of chakra overload… often spurring a grotesque physical metamorphosis… in order to accommodate the excess energy… Something the fairly vain Otsutsuki… normally loath to have to do… even though they may covet it’s power… It is exceedingly rare… beyond rare… to be born with such visual prowess… even among the Ostutsuki… except among a renegade offshoot tribe of the Otsutsuki… who were known for it… They were known as the Starlight Tribe… the rogue Starlight branch… of the Otsutsuki Clan…

Chocho:

Mama!… Mama!… Are we Starlight people?!?…

Karui:

Well… I suppose we are… in a manner of speaking… as your granpa would say…

Choza:

Nice peepers Chochochan… my starlight princess…

Shintaro:

The emperor has always coveted the power of the Starlight Tribe… a power associated with senjutsu… If the emperor fears anything at all… he fears the power of senjutsu most of all… The power of senjutsu is theoretically and potentially unlimited… because it taps into the power and energy of the meta-verse it self… providing powers and abilities that are not available by the consumption of chakra pills… the very chakra pills… upon which… the entirety of the Otsutsuki Clan… including the emperor himself… are completely dependent upon… and have become effectively unable to move beyond them… to do anything else… any other way… Traditions like that of Mount Myoboku… Ryuchi Cave… Shikotsu Forest… even Uzushio… if the emperor would have ever have heard of it… all form an ongoing existential threat to the power prestige and authority… of the empire in general… and of the emperor himself within the clan…

Shikamaru:

Do you mean to say… that the emperor is vulnerable?…

Shintaro:

In a manner of speaking… But taking advantage of that is easier said than done… The power of the emperor himself… is beyond imagining… If he were simply to come here alone… just to pick a fight with every shinobi on the planet simultaneously… irregardless of who won… the entire planet would be utterly destroyed… as mere collateral damage of the fight…

Kakashi:

The Otsutsuki came to this planet already… and they were destroyed… not the planet… When Kaguya was released it was the team of shinobi that I trained… including your nephew Naruto… that sealed her away for good… I know… I was there… I helped them do it!…

Shintaro:

That was nothing!… Momoshiki was… at best… mid-level for the clan… The Otsutsuki get far more powerful than that… and the Otsutsuki Clan it self numbers in the five hundred million range… give or take… each with a minimum of a Byakugan… the most common form of visual prowess among the Otsutsuki… if not something more powerful… or a more exotic visual prowess… that no one on this planet has ever seen before…

Hiashi:

How can you call the Byakugan… a minimum?…

Shintaro:

No offense meant old friend… It’s just a simple fact that it is commonplace among the Otsutsuki Clan… But there is no such thing as the gentle fist among the Otsutsuki… that requires diligence and training for that… And perhaps the greatest weakness of the Otsutsuki Clan… besides their chakra pill dependency… and the insanely complicated bureaucracy that manages it all… it is their incorrigible narcissistic complacency… The easy power and long life provided the use of chakra pills… causes most Otsutsuki to believe this is an unalterable and invincible fact of their existence… So much so… that they genuinely believe themselves to be gods… And they all take that for granted… with the very same complacency that led the Otsutsuki bureaucracy to send a handful of Otsutsuki to deal with the errant gardener Kaguya… for failing to produce chakra fruit for the empire… among other things… They knew nothing… nor did they care to know anything… about shinobi… out of narcissistic complacency… But three dead Otsutsuki in less than a year… will be bound to make an empire of false gods take notice… Any such affront to the precious divine conceit of the Otsutsuki… must be destroyed… or otherwise made to submit… You have seen nothing yet…

Shikamaru:

So your saying… that their coming for us… The end of the world is nigh… That sort of thing…

Shintaro:

Oh… They are definitely coming for you all… But as far as whether it’s nigh or not… that depends on the timetable of the Otsutsuki… A matter of urgency for the Otsutsuki bureaucracy… might take a thousand years… A matter of urgency for the emperor… might take a thousand seconds… Either way… there can be no time lost in preparations and planning… if you wish to have any chance at preserving anything you hold dear…

Kakashi:

And I suppose your the one to save us all?… Shintaro savior?…

Shintaro:

I am no savior!… I am your sensei!… Assuming you have the good sense to accept me as such!… Whether you do so or not… survival… let alone success… is far from likely… let alone guaranteed… If you choose otherwise… then I will have done my due diligence… and I will take my family… and take my leave of you all… and leave you to your fates… As it is… you don’t really have many other options… At the moment you don’t even have my report!… as far as you know…

Karui:

The hell you are!!!… What makes you think you can just blow into town… sweep us all up… and take us… wherever the hell you want?!?…

Shintaro:

Because I have the power and the prerogative to do so!… And there is no power on this planet that can stop me…

Kakashi:

That is a rather bold and ominous statement…

Shintaro:

It is what it is… And I can back up every word of it… Perhaps you require a suitable demonstration… Baca shinobi often insist on learning the hard way… It always seems as if baca shinobi can only ever understand power… and then only when proves itself to them… by pummeling their faces with it!…

Kakashi:

Naruto and Sasuke will stop you… if no one else…

Shintaro:

My nephew and my grandson?… What a treat!… I can’t wait!…

Hiashi:

Wait!… Are you telling me… that Sasuke… is the grandson… of you and the Phoenix Flower?… But I thought that her child died with her in childbirth!…

Shintaro:

The lies of the Uchiha… and Konoha… and Shimura Danzo!… And also a conversation that I don’t intend to have without my grandson present… Perhaps after the fight… He’s bound to be more than a bit cranky with me… especially after what happened this morning… Should make for an interesting fight…

Hiashi:

I agree…

Hinata:

Papa?!?…

Hiashi:

I mean it… I think it would be instructive… There is so much complacency here… never mind the Otsutsuki… And no one will simply believe… the few of us who know of your power… since the five kage put such heavy restrictions on any information related to you… almost no one has any idea… And with all due respect to my son-in-law… and your grandson… they both could probably use a kick in the but too… But what do you think?… Kakashi?… You were their sensei…

Kakashi:

Well… We could always arrange a kumite bout… just outside of Konoha… Perhaps the Final Valley?…

Shintaro:

That will not do at all… For a proper demonstration… they must believe it to be a real fight… or as real as I can make it… without destroying everything… But it has to be in Konoha… So that they will take it seriously… with something to protect…

Hiashi:

Are you proposing one of your campaigns?…

Shintaro:

Of course… How else could it be done?…

Hiashi:

Oh… I would love to see that… In fact I can’t wait to see that…

Kakashi:

Sasuke will kill you!…

Shintaro:

Oh… I’m sure he will try!… I would expect nothing less from any Uchiha!… let alone my own grandson!…
